Makiwara Board Review & Training Tips
Hi All,
I am a Jeet Kune Do practitioner, short power adept, and started out as a Taekwondo green belt many years ago. After TKD I never had any additional formal training. It was all a matter of personal research, trial and error, and slowly developing my own approach to martial arts training. In the early 1980s I purchased a Makiwara Board and although this one is a little softer than that one, I still like the overall quality of the product.
A great test for true hand conditioning is being able to punch barefisted a hanging 150 pound bag - like the hanging bags they have in the LA Boxing chain - without cutting up the fingers and knuckles and without any significant bruising. I have achieved this. But you have to slowly build up to it and you also have to have a good nutritonal foundation, e.g., calcium, upscale high-potency fish oil (EPA specifically) and organic dehydrated vegetables in green powder form.
However, contrary to popular belief (and I notice a number of martial artists in here espousing it), one does not have to mount the Makiwara Board in any way. I didn't. It simply isn't necessary. All you have to do is put it on your bed (or floor) and punch down on it. Don't use full force at first or you will cut and bruise your hands. Be careful. Start out with five to ten punches after each workout. Slowly increase the force and number in upcoming months. After each session on an MB, apply (preferably organic) hand and body lotion to your knuckles and fingers. This will also help to condition them safetly and without injury.
It really is that easy to slowly condition one's hands for streetfighting and hitting a heavy bag barefisted.
You can see a picture of me in a JKD pose at my profile in UCS: http://origin.org/ucs/profile.cfm?uid=110323.

A makiwara board is a tool developed by the Okinawans for body conditioning and power generation training. The board you see above can be fixed to a longer board which is stuck into the ground. The support board should have a slight amount of flexibility.
Make sure not to secure this makiwara pad to a wall.

Excessive makiwara training and board breaking can effect the growth and development of bones and ligaments in children.

HI pat. You would use any sort of screw or nail appropriate to the surface you are fixing it on. Just go through the black portions of the wood on top and bottom.

Hi Lu - no this product does not come with any particular accessories for hanging. To hang it you would use standard screws or nails through the wood onto your surface. A quick piece of advice - hang this on something that has a little give, as opposed to a sturdy wall. Punching an immobile object repeatedly can have detrimental repercussions for your body.
