will the guard put a nasty taste in your mouth?

The plastic itself won't leave a taste in your month. The bacteria that can grow on it can get nasty. Wash it and keep it clean and dry and it won't taste bad. People soak it in mouthwash to keep it clean.

There are also antibacterial mouth guard cases that you can look into - http://www.boxingdepot.com/pr-mo-07.html . That combined with the occasional washing and you'll be good to go.

I do recommend this mouth guard over the other mouth guards in this price range. It was pretty easy to mold, took me around 2-3 tries, but feels great now. When you get it, it looks really small for an adult size, but when you heat it in boiling water, it expands to fit your mouth. I've been using this for my jiu jitsu training.

Almost
The product is a really good fit and hold in the mouth well but the upper lip has two spots where its a little sharp and it will cut your lip if you get hit there with a straight punch. i took the advice of will and cut it down with a razor and it worked pretty good be careful not to cut into the softer part of the gel.

Excellent product
Very pleased with the Shock Doctor Gel Max. It took 3 tries in the hot water before I got it shaped/reshaped for my bite, but I finally got it right and it works great. Previously, I was using the cheapo mouth guard that's fairly hard plastic after the hot water forming process. It was not comfortable, but got the job done. The Gel Max is a large step-up in both comfort and protection. I took a serious hook-heel kick to the bottom of my chin that jacked my jaw upward at an angle, bruising my chin and tweaking both jaw hinge points. My teeth didn't even notice, as the blow was completely absorbed by the gel. Good enough for me! Do they make one to fit chins?

Excellent gear.
Fits well, looks cool, solid protection, easy to breathe around while jaw is clenched.
Fit depends on how well you do during the boil and bite. Mine is just a bit loose, but it still stays in fine.

Almost Perfect
My daughter has been in martial arts for almost 7 years and this is by far the most comfortable mouth guard we have found for her. I agree with one reviewer in that they tend to run small and we switched to the ADULT size a couple of years ago when she was only 11 or so.
That said, they are fantastic! We have tried a lot of different ones that cost much more than the Gel Max and keep coming back. That says a lot for the Gel Max.
The only reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that because she is a 'chewer', we end up replacing them every month or so. Because they are soft and fit to the teeth, they are less sturdy in the long run and must be replaced more often. That means that I buy them 6 at a time and just keep a couple on hand at all times.
EXCELLENT MOUTH GUARD!

It's nice how you can custom-fit this to your teeth (by putting it in boiling water), but I found it too big for my mouth (too long), sticking out uncomfortably in the front, and causing vomiting reflex on the other side...

Best mouthguard I've ever used.
I've tried a variety of mouthguards, and despite fitting and trimming, my gums often end up with gashes. With this guard, the gel is against my gums so they don't get cut, and because the gel forms to my teeth better than with other guards, the guard stays in quite well.

My son wore it comfortably. Good instructions for fitting. Be sure to get a container and keep your mouth guard clean after every use.

Mouth size isn't directly related to height, but I do think you'll be better suited with the adult size. If you're used to mouthguards you'll be comfortable in this model (it is well designed).

Does this do the same as a full mouth guard?
I am researching guards and would like to know if this guard provides the same protection as a full mouth guard. For example if you were to get hit with a straight shot to the chin would it help reduce the impact and chance of a concussion? or is this guard mainly for protecting teeth?

This mouthguard will reduce the impact and chance of concussion. The key is that there is shock absorbing material between the teeth where you bite down. That is what helps reduce the transfer of impact.

This mouthpiece fits well and is VERY easy to fit. You can breath and talk well with it in to. I can easily say that it's the best mouthpiece I've ever owned. Would highly recommend buying this.

"shapes to mouth"
Would it just shape to my mouth without putting it in boiling water or dies it take the imprint of my teeth by wearing it a few times? I only had one of those cheapy mouth guards and because of my teeth, I had to put it on my bottom teeth. (My canines kinda curve and touch the teeth next to my front teeth and overlap a little) So, would this be a good mouth guard would you think?

Hi Angie. This mouthguard tends to conform to your teeth just by natural wear, but I do recommend boil-and-bite to get extra flexibility and conformity.
Once done, it should meet your needs well.

Awesome Customer Service!
Team, I had to share. Other than a very prompt order process, the customer service your staff has is top notch. I botched up an order and called to correct it. The timely support, courteous representative, and fast credit response was spot on. Much is to be said about that sort of service. Thanks guys for all you do each day. From Ft. Happy!
This is my second mouth guard and I like it so much better. I was using one of those Women's Low Profile ones and actually, it really didn't fit me well. It was too low profile to offer complete protection. FYI, if you are a female and are contemplating a regular mouthguard or the Women's LowPro (which is a double-top and bottom guard), go with the LoPro only if you are a tiny person with a smaller jaw and small teeth or a child. At 5'7 but small framed I found a much better fit with this Shock Doctor. It was easy to custom fit and it really stays put. I've taken some hits to the mouth and jaw and was just fine. I don't know what people are talking about with the lip guard problems. Mine is nice and smooth. I've had direct hits with no bleeding and no irritation from wearing it. So, give a try, I think you'll be glad you did!

cheap boil-to-fit mouthguards work.... these are easier. Plus they offer a dental warranty - I think up to $10,000.... of course, thats probably just a gimmick, but I dont take chances on my teeth

This is a mouthguard if you dont want to have to boil to fit your mouth.
It is top quality.
They have a guarrantee also (or is it a warranty?) if any teeth get broken. Guess theyre that sure.

I already had one of these mouth guards for myself and now bought one for each of my two sons, who are also advanced karate students. It may take 3 or 4 attempts to get the guard formed correctly, as it tends to be slippery once boiled. Once you get it formed right, it is very comfortable and provides excellent protection. I took a hook-heel kick to the bottom of my chin that bruised my chin and jacked both hinge points of my jaw - but my teeth were fine, thanks to the Shock Doctor Guard. That's proof enough for me.

Poor quality
Although, once fit, this guard does stay in place very well, the outer hard rubber shell tends to rub against the upper lip and can cause cuts on direct impact. This can be fixed with 5 minutes and a razor, but the inner rubber is way too soft. Mine melted when I left my bag in my car when my spare "cheap-o" mouthguard stayed in shape just fine. IMO, they spent too much time making this guard look cool and not enough thinking about quality.

Perfect fit!
Kids like it and use it more than they did the previous one I got for them. Easy to fit to them as well. They do run small, but are for kids under 11. Next sixe up worked great for older kid.

Sized VERY small
We use shock doctor mouth gurads (previous purchases from a sporting goods store. We always buy adult small for a 13 and 11 year old. These adult sized shock doctors barely fit my nine year old- we are making him use it though he says it is too small because the two we bought for the other boys do not even come close to a fit. What ever size the chart says to get- go up a size or it wil be useless- my 11 year old says he can "almost" fit it "inside" his teeth.

I don't see why it should only be for the US... they don't say anything about that in their warranty. You can check their warranty here:

Good Mouth Guard
I have tried many different types of mouthguards and so far this one is the most comfortable I've tried. I am highly satisfied with this mouthguard and I think it should work fine for most people as long as the instructions are followed carefully

Still have my teeth
I use this mouth guards for a number of activities and I find it pretty comfortable and non-interfering. I don't find myself thinking about not letting it fall out or being to bulky and what not. As far as it's protection, I've been nocked in the mouth quite a few times and I still have my teeth. I can't complain about that.

I used this mouthguard for Boxing and MMA. I liked that it was easy to mold. It fits great and offers awesome protection. Also not that expensive.

Did the boil and fit process 4 times and this mouthgaurd still did not fit properly, falls right off of my son's upper teeth. shockdoctor.com was unwilling to give me a refund, only an exchange (didn't want another shock doctor product since this one was terrible). Do not buy!

I have been ordering from karatedepot happily for several years. This time, I ordered the Shock Doctor, size Youth, since my kid is 11.5 y.o. What I received was a nice piece but for very young youths. The label says <10 y.o. but the website does not.

I bought a couple of these for my grandsons ages 7 and 12 and they were too small for either one of them! I wish that they had other sizes besides youth and adult!!! Or perhaps there was insufficient sizing info.

I moved to New Zealand from the UK last year and wanted to get back in to Tae Kwon Do so needed some new kit. I have bought this along with a new number of other products, all of which have been great.
Make sure you follow the fitting instructions and you can't go wrong. Fits really nicely and gives great protection.

You can't beat this mouth guard for functionality & comfort. The directions for fitting were as simple as they could possibly be.

I have this mouthpiece and bought the pink one for my daughter. It provides the protection you need without inhibiting your breathing.
The way it locks your jaw in place with proper fitting and use really does what it claims. I have taken a hefty kick or two right to the kisser and not so much as a sore jaw.
The fact that it came in pink made the day for my 8 year old. She didn't want the blue or green one and now she shows off her mouth piece to all of her girlfriends. I trust this product will serve my daughter well and I take my children's health serious.
Some advice: 1. *DO* replace your mouthpiece as per the manufacturer's instructions.
2. *DO NOT* chew on your mouthpiece. While the mouthpiece may seem fine you do weaken it.
3. These are sized a bit oddly. They run a bit on the small side. I would switch to adult size starting at about age 11 or so. The youth size is too small at that age for proper protection.

First off, great mouth guard. Its just about as comfortable as can be and very inexpensive. Very durable also, the black part is rubbery while the blue is more plastic-gelly. I rated it a 4 because it took me 3 tries to mold it right because its a little bit more complicated with the rubber outside. no biggy tho, just make sure your teeth are perfectly in the middle of the guard when you size it. VERY COMFORTABLE!

My son is always complaining that his mouth guard hurts his basic mouth when he is sparring at karate. I bought two of these based on the description and customer reviews and I'm completely satisfied. No more complaints while sparring. Thanks Shock Doctor!

This is a great mouth guard for everyone. It was extremely easy to size even if you normally wear partials. Remove them when sizing and it will fill in the space. lol
I have not been hit in the mouth with it yet but I am not worried it will hold up I am sure.

Excellent Mouth Guard.
This mouth guard is the best mouth for it's price because of it's comfort and how it fits into your mouth. The mouth guard comes in the package not fitting at all, however if you bother to read the directions you put it in boiling water and it will get really soft. So you can mold it into any shape you want, or you can bite down on it and make a perfect cast of your teeth in the mouth guard. The mouth guard is comfortable and fits very well. A great buy and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is getting into sparring, football, etc.

Best Solution at a Reasonable Price
This is a very good guard while being priced in the ''easily replaceable'' category. My daughter is a mouthguard 'chewer' and this offers superior protection with a price that makes it easy to buy several at a time for replacement. At least for her, they are soft enough to be worn down by her teeth clenching during sparring. They still have my highest award. The 4 stars is for a little lack of durability, but that is to be expected. It is harder to find a better mouthguard and I have tried LOTS of THEM!

Cann not fit
I have spend couple of hours trying to fit this mouthpiece into my mouth. After many unsuccessful attempts the frame separated from malleable part, so I had to throw it away. I never had this problem with simple mouth pieces.
