XMA Sword and Contact

Hey guys, 2 questions for you. I have broken 4 staffs (White oak, Red Wood, and 2 oak) with 2 swords (Demo competition swords). The only sword I have not broken was an oak wood sword, and this one Brown oak staff. I'm in line for a new sword, something a bit more fancy than the one I have right now. So... Would this sword do good when it comes into contact with other swords and in competition.. and would this sword be strong enough to last through multiple daily XMA forms. I might usually drop this sword on the ground, so keep that in mind. The ground differs between grass, Floor Matts, and cement. BTW should I just save up to buy a Stronger XMA sword, or would this sword beable to last me?

Hi Dempsey. I think your best bet would be to go with this model: wp-ke-71. The wooden ones that come with a saya (scabbard) tend to be thinner and will break easier.

White Oak Bokken

Scabbard was of less quality than I expected, but the blade has held up well to light combat. I would recommend this for light training and mostly skill development instead of actual combat.

Hello.

Does this come also with a "Tsuba" (flange) as it is shown in the picture?

I know this brings its "Saya" (Scabbard) but I want to make sure that it has its suba, too.

By the way, how much does shipping to Caracas-Venezuela cost?

Yes this item comes with a tsuba. As for shipping, add the item to your cart and go to the checkout part of the website. Before having to pay anything you can insert your address and receive shipping estimates and costs.

Tournaments and Competition

Would this sword be good in Tournaments and competitions such as sword sparring and judged techniques, or is it only good for performing forms and steps?

The white oak is quite durable and could hold up to some contact. It is also aesthetically pleasing so would show well in a forms competition.

One Good, One Not-So-Good

I bought two of these bokken and received them this morning. The first one I pulled out was pretty sweet looking - nice, smooth and straight. It fit into the scabbard perfectly and was a good weight.

However, the second one I opened noticeably curved to the right upon inspection. It was also a little lighter and not as solid-feeling. But hey, what can you do? Even thousand-dollar guitars can warp during shipping.

The Scabbard strength

How reliable is the scabbard? Is it strong enough to hold the sword if you swing it, or is it really loose?

The scabbard utilizes a discreet magnet to hold the sword in place. It holds even when the sword tsuka is facing the ground, however I wouldn't recommend swinging the sword with scabbard still on.

How long before the color fades

How long would the White look of the bokken last? Basically, how long will it be before the white color begins to fade?

The wood is naturally white all the way through, therefore you don't have to worry about the white chipping off like paint or even fading much over time.

I really want this sword!

I have an old chipped wooden sword that started to lose its performance appearance. This sword looks so cool! The white look to it, the scabbard. EVERYTHING! I cant wait until I can get this sword. This is something going on my wishlist!

I bought this as a gift for a friend and after inspecting it upon receipt I now want one for my own use. The weight and craftsmanship were outstanding and I love the implementation of the magnet in the scabbard.

Loving it :)

Just got mine a couple weeks ago, and so far, I love it. My training doesn't begin until fall but my instructor says it's a great piece for working technique. Not so good for sparring, though. The weight and length for me is perfect, as I'm a small female. Thanks :)

how does the sword stay in the scabbard?

Hey Colt. The fit of the sword inside the scabbard is snug, while still being smooth when drawing in and out. As such, the snugness provides a little friction which helps prevent the sword from slipping.

That being said, the main thing that keeps the sword in place is good posture and technique. The sword should maintain a slight upward arc when resting on the hip, and the left hand should frequently be resting on the tsuba (handguard), keeping the sword in place.

Yes this bokken would be a fine choice. The white oak is durable but not cumbersome, and having the saya (scabbard) will help in your development of noto (re-sheathing).

Bit dissapointed

Not sure if I just got a bad piece, but sometimes the sword goes into the scabbard, and sometimes it gets stuck half way.
Frustrating when your trying to practice drawing and returning. I should have just stuck with my display samurai sword and saved the money.
I would return it but I already threw away $22.00 and don't feel like wasting anymore towards return shipping costs.

Good Trainer

This is a great training tool for drawing, returning and solo work. However, the quality is just okay and certainly not good enough for sparring, but for the price, I can't really complain it has a useful purpose.

White Oak Bokken with Scbbard

This bokken arrived on time - a day before my class. I bought this because it has a saya(scabbard). I just use this to practise nuki dashi (unsheathing and unsheathing) while I wait for my katana which I ordered somewhere else. The product is good but the bokken is a bit thin so I don't use it for sparring. Over all, I have no regrets in purchasing this product.

White Oak Bokken

This is a marvelous idea. I've had to use wrapping papper tubing to creat a scabbard for my Bokken to practice drawing and returning the sword. This is a great training device, I highly recommend it!!

This is pretty durable, I sparred with my sensei as soon as I got it and it still lasted. Has a good weight and the scabbard is a nice addition. I would recommend this.

I just got the sword today and I am a somewhat satisfied. However, this sword is definitively not useful for actual combat because it is not nearly dense enough nor is the quality of the guard that great (It is obviously glued on). I would only use this sword to practice drawing and sheathing.

PS. It is very light (White Oak), so it is not really good for strength training.

For strenght training use a baseball or softball bat with additional weights that will help you build the nuscles you want.
