I can't say for certain Cain, we haven't done an official weight test for this item. The metal should have no problem - the only possible complication is if the rope can be tied off properly to function as a stress point.

Your equipment is only as good as you take care of it
Purchased many things from this store. Good items, good prices.
But for this grappling hook (which is found in many other stores and magazines) the rope is to small. Use it for tent lashing or throw it away. I climb with 1/2" to 5/8" rope. Which is tough for most people. Buy some kermantle about that size(33 to 35' length). Put a figure eight bend and good to go. Chain would better to get away from a knot.
Be sure to practice using your rope first, and always throw with an area for the hook to come down and not on top of your head.
For those that are asking about strength, I can not help you. But search for tensile/breaking strength of the diameter of the metal (mild steel, hardened) and you should have a good amount to go off of. Remember to take care of your equipment, the bolt and nut is the weakest part, and if you do not take care of it, it will fail you.
This is a heavy grappling hook, so for the most part it should support most people. But you must mind your point you are attaching the hook too, that could fail before your hook. Hope this helps.

Not in particular Bounder, just be sure to test it to make sure it can support your weight before trying it 'for real'.

I would advise against trees. While it will work, there is to many varibles to go wrong. Walls are perfect, roofs are but you need a ledge to set the hook too.
Study items of which you want to hook this too.

I bought this because I wanted to use it for climbing trees and buildings and what not. The first time I used it the rope snapped and I ended up with a sprained ankle. The hook it self is extremely sturdy but after twisting it too collapsed. The top bolt came off and broke (I may have twisted it a bit too far) but all in all it's a good hook for the price. I just recommend actually buying some climbing rope before using it.

Sorry to hear of your injury! As a note to future buyers - be sure to test the rope cautiously before trying any climbing. Both the rope and the hook have max stress points.

okiken, for obvious reasons, could we get some numbers on those stress limits? I'm thin but I'd really like to know.
