Though the wood is a little bit harder than wood used at competitions this is not a solid single piece of wood. It was actually five pieces glued together. On some of the pieces the glue was oozing between the seems. These can not be used in many competitions but are fine for practicing at home.  

My Son and I bought two of these staffs two years ago. The feel of the wood is wonderful. You have a solid grip, even when you sweat. We practice often on our cement driveway with the occasional drop and the staffs have held up great even though their a toothpick style. Due to my own negligence by storing my staff upright, the tip of one of the staffs has warped slightly but can still use in a competition. Definitely worth the price.
