Is this bo varnished?
Is this bo varnished? Are any bo from Karate Depot varnished? I'd like to buy an unvarnished bo.
Thanks.

I've purchased a total of 2 of these, on separate occasions. The first for myself. No problems with it for several years. Finally, it cracked on a knot towards the center. I was showing how flexible it was and I hit it just right. Now it's a set of tapered escrima sticks. The second I purchased as a gift for my mother. It had a number of large knots in it, thus rendering it unusable for any contact. It was replaced, though it was during Christmas time so it took a couple of weeks. Overall they appear to be decent staffs, capable of taking punishment. The wood is very flexible. I was putting all my weight on it when I cracked mine (~190lbs). I liked the weight of it. Heavier than softwood bos, but lighter than hardwood. It also moved nicely in the hands. It comes with some sort of finish on it, which when it was a bo I never removed. When it became a set of sticks I removed the finish and decided I prefer the raw wood far more. (This is a personal preference for raw wood in general). I do recommend buying from this company. Especially as if you get a lemon, they'll replace it for free.

I don't have an exact weight for you at this time, but I'll get my hands on a few pieces and do an average. In the meantime, understand that this wood is heavier than rattan but lighter than red oak.

Sorry Sam I've never tried to stain/finish a white waxwood bo. You may need to plumb deeper into the internet for some advice on that one.

Cracked First strike
My 5 foot cracked on the first strike with another wax bow, I did not read other reviews or I would have sent it back for replacement, I soaked the ends in gas and used It In the dark then threw the rest in the fire pit.

Excellent Staff
I now have 2 of these staffs. They both arrived very well packaged and protected for shipment. Neither staffs had any splits - but I haven't put them to hard use yet. The first staff has more knots and more of a shine to the finish while the second doesn't have knots and is more of a bare wood finish.I am very pleased with both and would order again without hesitation. The white wax wood seems to be a "warmer" wood than my red oak staff, and somewhat lighter, and I prefer using it for those reasons.

Rough finish, but otherwise great.
I still have my ancient straight hardwood staff from way back when. When I started training again last year, I noticed how much lighter the tapered staff I was using at the dojo was. Since it was mostly kata, I decided to buy myself a lighter, tapered staff. So far the only gripe I have is that the finish on the one I received is very thin in places. Enough so that the wood grain is easily seen. For practicing kata and tricks, it's great.

Cracked Bo
I read the reviews before I purchased this bo and noticed that someone had received a cracked bo on the first try. Strangely enough, that was also my experience, although I opted not to try again. The misshapen area in which the crack was located was instantly visible, and I have to wonder why a merchant would send defective products.

Hi justicejanice. Unfortunately with something as alive and variable as wood the manufacturers we work with occasionally (albeit rarely) overlook a faulty piece. If this happens too frequently we contact the manufacturer about the issue, and if it isn't resolved we remove them from our offerings.
That being said, should a piece get through that isn't up to par we are more than happy to replace it! Please reach out to us at csupport@karatedepot.com and we will work with you.

Just Right
I ordered this Bo for my son, who is beginning weapons training. The staff arrived in perfect condition. We bought the 5 foot size because of my son's age and size, and it is just right in terms of weight, length, diameter. It also looks cool. It is fun to watch my son use it and lood good doing so. He easily looks more impressive that the smaller kids who use a longer bo, which is just too big for them.

First Bo
this will be the first bo I purchase and I have been doing research for hours on different woods and tapered vs straight etc. but i am still unsure of what i should buy. I am in a stunt fighting group and just recently graduated to weapons. the bos we used are all nicked and scratched from battle damage and sparring using dull blades and various other weapons. basically I'm looking for a bow that is 6ft that is flexible but isnt gonna shatter when struck with a sword (i understand scratches are inevitable). being smooth allowing me to slide my hands is also a must.
my question is basically the best wood type and diameter for this scenario, I basically narrowed it down to rattan white wax or bamboo (the one they lend me at practice is bamboo) but i am still open to suggestions from people with more knowledge than me. as for diameter i am no really sure how to tell what the best diameter for me is when i can't personally test the bo (seeing as i am purchasing it online)

Hi l337d09. There are a couple of factors at play here. First of all, I recommend a straight bo over tapered for extended contact. Simply having more wood on the ends where a lot of contact happens will help prevent shearing and breaking. Second, red oak and white wax are both good, but in my experience this bamboo bo is the best:
wp-bo-15
. When taking contact, the wood tends to compress instead of splinter, which is good for the hands as well as the bo itself. It is lighter than the typical red oak bo which means you won't be burdened during quick movements.
As for diameter, your ideal bo may have a a diameter less than 1 1/4 inches, but for contact that diameter is good to have.

2nd time the charm!!!
The first staff was damaged. It was shipped with epoxy filler in the faults of the staff, and a crack along the length about dead center. One light hit on the bag to test it's integrity proved looks were not deceiving. It split along the crack.
I contacted customer service explained the problem(s) and they immediately shipped another one. This staff was a night and day difference from the first. It's integrity is good, no visible faults, and it has withstood two sessions of two-man staff drills. It is fairly well balanced, and overall for the price a good deal.
Would have been nice to get it the first time, however being honorable and making good counts big for me...Thanks for resolving the issue speedily, and for providing a good product !!!!

Few questions about the staff
Hello, I am 13, have practiced for a while, and am looking to preform.
1. Would Tapered make it easier to balance with or easier to twirl?
2. Is still strong enough to spar with?
3. Difference between youth and adult
4. What is the bend amount with a solid swing?
5. Is it heavy enough for strength training or should I go heavier.
6. I am currently 5' but I am SURE I will grow by the time of my tournament

Hey Austin. It's great to see you doing some research and trying to get the best bo for you. I'll try to help with some answers:
1. Tapered has a more centered balance point, which makes it a little easier to do quick spins.
2. The adult is still strong enough to spar with, but youth tends to be a little more fragile.
3. The youth has a thinner diameter (width).
4. It will bend slightly, but not nearly as much as bamboo.
5. This won't provide much in the way of strength training. This bo would be better suited to that:
wp-bo-03
, although it's not as fast.
6. I think you still have to go with the 5 foot length, unless you are expecting a substantial growth spurt.

If you're in a more traditional style I would say jump up to the 6 foot. If you need it for spinning and tricks you'll want the 5 foot.

Hey Justin. You can get it shipped to Canada, not a problem. However the free shipping offer is only available to the continental U.S. That means there will be a small fee for you, which you'll get to determine before being charged for the purchase.

What size?
Hi, I am 5'5''-6'', and without cutting it down at all(for any bo), which size is better for me? Also, which bo, out of all of the ones you have on this website, is the lightest/easiest to learn moves or tricks with? I have a heavier hardwood one and a foam one from here, but I wasn't sure if the foam one is the lightest available? Thanks!!!

At the moment the tapered white wax is one of our lightest, with only the carved rattan being lighter -
wp-bo-10
.
As for size - a 5 foot would make tricks and spins easier, while a 6 foot would be better for combative purposes. Your choice!

It's pretty close to the foam bo in weight, but you do get to work with wood instead of foam. It also looks quite neat in person.
You'll have to contemplate if you think it's worth your coin.

I think this is a good choice for you Eric. The tapered variety should help you with spins and other acrobatics.
The 5 foot version would be faster for you, although you lose a little range.

I believe it would hold up ok against a regular oak bo. Although keep in mind tapered bo have slightly less structural integrity than straight bo so there is still a chance of breaking.

I can tell you that 6 foot is a good size for you outside of getting one custom made to your exact height needs (About 6'3").
As for which bo is best, that would depend on what you are using it for. You'd want to weigh durability vs speed.

How light?
How much lighter would this bo be compared to an oak bo? And is it true that white wax wood staffs are more likely to warp? Also, is this bo tapered on both sides?

The white wax wood is noticeably lighter than the oak bo, while still possessing respectable durability. I'm not aware of any warping tendency differences between the two types of wood.
This bo is tapered on both sides (in fact, to my knowledge all tapered bos are.)

It's ok
When I recieved this bo the first time. It was warped. I called the KD and they sent a new one right away. It got here in four days, which was even faster than the first one. This one isn't warped, but it also has some rough spots, like it wasn't sanded all the way.
I like the color and weight of this bo. All in all, it will do well for my first bo. I don't think I will buy online again though.

Fast, but touchy
Bought this with the red oak staight staff as an experiment. (Read my red oak review for more info). The taper was easier on my connective tissue and muscles to begin, but quickly fell out of favor compared to a straight staff. The taper is more difficult to control. The low inertial mass makes it more useful as a thrusting weapon. As another experiment, a straight waxwood staff was bought elsewhere, same six foot length. (I hope Karate Depot stocks straight waxwood sometime, Depot product quality is superior.) The straight waxwood handling compares favorably to the red oak straight, but the quality is not as good. For my purposes, the straight staff is the one.

Pretty decent
This bo has been taken some serious whacks and shows no signs of wear. The delivery speed was fantastic (2 days for standard shipping). The bos we ordered were slightly warped, but no stick is perfect.

Too Thick for the 5' Length
I got this for a friend whose child needed the 5' length. When the bo arrived, it was VERY thick in diameter and I offered to send it back to get a different bo. You would think that the manufacturer would realize that someone small enough to need a 5' bo would have less than adult size hands, but I guess they don't. It is lightweight, but it is also thick and chunky looking and that makes it awkward in forms. I would recommend a different bo for small adults and children. Maybe the longer ones are okay, but the 5' looks and feels awkward to use.

Actually this is an ignorant statement a bo should be about as tall as the person wielding it, it's not their fault the kid has tiny hands.

If you wanted a bo to suit a kid, they sell a Youth Waxwood Bo, and this item has a link to it right on the page. You might actually want to try researching items before you buy them

Empty Cup
The quality and durability is quite effecient! The handle of this bo serves its purpose, during my kata. The reason a star was taken off is due to cosmetic issues. The bo has smudges on it and that has a few ruff parts, which need sanding. I would recommend this bo for anyone starting out with the bo.

Even for beginners it's mostly just a personal preference. The white wax is nice and light but tends to absorb less sweat on the hands. If you want something easy to handle, white wax or rattan is nice. For something that has a little more body and can take a hit, go with hardwood.

It all really depends on what you do with the staff - If you're doing more slow Kata or fighting or things like that, Hardwood and Oak are perfect; If you're doing like crazy spinning and flipping and all that, definitely go with Waxwood, Rattan, or Lotus

The shipment was supposed to arrive on the fifteenth; arrived on the tenth. Nicely sanded. No cracks, no bumps. Rather shiny, actually. The ends are tapered similar to the diameter of a nickel. Light, durable. Held up nice, even in the trauma of cheap shipping and handling. Packaged REALLY cold. Haven't had the chance to practice with, except when I spun it, and accidentally hit the ceiling. The shock absorption was nice on my hands. Six foot is the perfect size for an average height male. Five star!

I am very pleased with the wax wood bo. I wish it was cylindrical, not tapered on the ends, but for my purposes it will do just fine. I don't do Oriental styles, I'm more of an English quarterstaff type because of my limited mobility. This is straight, doesn't look like a de-barked sapling or twisted branch, no obvious defects. Time will tell, but this is one of the best waxwood specimens I've seen.

I have had this staff for about 2 weeks its been dropped quite a few times and just keeps going. This is my first one so I dont really have any basis for comparison. Just know that it takes drops (drops and more drops), and other random user/environmental abuse very well.

Simply the best
This is simply the best bo I have ever owned. The weight is heavy enough for real training, but light enough to use in competitions. Do not hesitate if you are thinking about buying this bo. Excellent customer service.

Best staff you can get
I definitely recommend waxwood, very light, strong, just enough flex, and it has a very nice feel in your hand.

Like these Bos.
First, I received my order incredibly fast. In class, my white wax bo was admired by the other students and my Sifu. The smooth finish allows me to execute techniques faster and it has made it possible for me to move through my form quickly and smoothly. I can honestly recommend this product.
