Difference between youth and adult

The youth has sizes 4, 5 and 6 ft. The adult has 5 and 6 ft. What is the difference? Permalink

The major difference is in the diameter. The youth bo is a smaller central diameter tapered down to a finer point. This is useful for younger hands that are smaller, but is also a bit more fragile when it comes to contact.

Nice staff

solid product

I got this for my son (and I) to practice with something heavier than the graphite staffs we use in the dojang. Heavier and thicker weapons help strengthen your wrists, forearms, and shoulders. This staff is very good for that. It's a nice contrast from the graphite, and I've noticed improvement in my forms and technique.

When we got it, the finish bled a little onto our hands. No biggie, but we had to wipe it off.

My only concern is the hardwood getting dinged, scuffed, etc, when we practice in the garage or driveway. I might try a rattan one next.

which staff to use?

Hello. I am 20 years old and learning how to use a bo staff for the first time just for the curiosity. I bought a black tapered bo but im pretty sure it is to heavy for me. Im 6 feet tall. Would this be the bo staff i should use or at least start out with?

Hi adejuwon. For someone in your situation I would recommend the white wax tapered bo: wp-bo-32. The bo is light but still durable. Get the 6 foot length.

Youth Hardwood Bo

The Bo staff is a quality product. My daughter is very pleased with it.

KD is no longer carrying any training videos, however, so I had to order those separately from Amazon.

Which one to get?

My little bro is only about 3' 8" (age 7) and I am myself 5' 6" (age 12). We're beginners at using a staff. We would like a staff that is lightweight, used mainly for demos. Can you recommend which is the best for us?

Hi aj. For your little brother I recommend the bo on this page: wp-bo-31. It is nice, lightweight, and easy to use. Go for the 4 foot length.

As for you, I recommend getting the bo featured on this page we are using right now. You'll have to go with the 6 foot version. You can either start out using it at full 6 feet and just grow into it, or you can have someone saw off an inch or two at both ends so it fits you better. Remember with a tapered bo don't just saw off at one end - take a little off of both ends so it stays balanced!

Black belt Bo

Help, my daughter just earned her black belt in TKD. As a gift we will give her a weapon of her choice. She has choosen the Bo Staff. Can you recommend a nice looking staff for her to work and display? She is 13 and around 4'10".

Congrats to your daughter for her achievement. To start, you'll want a 5 foot bo. From what I know of TKD bo work you'll need something light for spinning. The bo found on this page is a good choice. Another good choice is the white wax bo: wp-bo-31. Both are light and well balanced, the white wax is a bit smoother in texture and lighter in coloration.

Wood Glue?

The bo itself would've been a good product for the price. It was solid, perfect height and weight. But as I'm looking at this, I notice that on one end of the bo that the wood was cracked. Not to worry, they poured a ton of wood glue on the end before they shipped it. So now it has a bunch of dried wood glue on the end. Really crappy.

Lightweight. Good for small hands.

I ordered this bo as a present for someone else. When it arrived I checked it out - it was very lightweight, fast, decently tough, and very good for small hands. When they unwrapped it they immediately loved it. I would definitely recommend this bo for children, anyone with small hands, women, or anyone who wants a lightweight bo that is decently tough.

I am a woman about 5'6" and am looking to order a Bo and a Jo. Think I found my Bo- the tapered 6' red oak that I will cut down to size. However, I'm looking now for a Jo about 50" and 1" in diameter- non tapered and not sure which one to go with. Ths youth bo is the right diameter and I can cut the 5' down but it's tapered. Tradiontal jos are non tapered and about 1" or less in diameter. Any suggestions?

Great Product. Great Service.

Bought this staff for my 9 year old daughter. She's a bit small for her age. First, the staff is a PERFECT fit for her. I'm also pleased with the quality. Seems sturdy and I expect it to hold up well for her.

On another note, when I first ordered this staff, it was damaged during the shipping process. After receiving it, I called to report the problem. The customer service representative I spoke with could not have been nicer. Without any problem at all, she kindly offered to ship me a replacement. I didn't have to pay extra shipping, or return the damaged one. All in all, I was very happy, and will definitely be ordering from KarateDepot.com again!

Not sure which bo to start with...

I'm a TKD student looking for a beginner bo. I'd like a tapered bo for forms. I'm 5' 10" so I'll get a 6' bo, but would this bo be suitable for an adult who wants a lighter bo, or should I just get the adult-sized version of it?

The main difference between the youth 6' and the adult 6' is the thickness. The youth begins at 1" and tapers down as opposed to 1 1/4 or 1 1/8. That makes the youth bo faster as well as weaker.

If your forms involve a lot of spinning instead of striking power, the youth is an ok choice.

Hey Chey. Working under the assumption that your son will experience another growth spurt, I'd probably go with a 5 foot bo. If you are good with woodworking, you can grab a 5 foot bo and cut it down to about 4'6".

Is it right?

Hello,I'm 11 years old and almost 5 feet tall i am wondering is this bo good for me? (I am fairly new to Taekwondo). I like how the white waxwood staff looks though to please recomend one and a good size for me once again i am almost five feet tall. I would like to get an answer so i could buy one asap please!

Hi Pheonix. A 5 foot bo would be just about perfect for you. I also think that you would enjoy the white wax wood as a beginner bo since it is light, easy to handle, and looks nice.

This is a youth bo so I'm not sure if this is what you need. Consider this bo instead - wp-bo-08. It's light and good for demos.

If it's a soft target, yes. If you beat it too consistently on a hard target it might break as it is tapered and thin in general.

prefered staff?

im stuck between getting this light staff and a heavier red oak staff. im 5'10 and 170 lbs. im pretty strong but i want to know if the heavier staff would be managable for a beginner like me. im looking to learn as exercise and enjoyment. i want a staff that i can count on for awhile but i also want a staff that is easy enough to manipulate. can anyone suggest a staff

Hi Phil. If you want it to be able to take a bit of impact for application purposes, go with some with a little more meat to it like this one: wp-bo-03. However, if you think tournament performances might be in your future, the lighter bo here might be better.

This bo is good for practice and will be able to tolerate light sparring. It won't take much heavy banging though as it is thin and tapers off.

Youth Hardwood Bo

This is a very nice staff. Its a great size for my daughters (7 and 9). It's small diameter is a much better fit to their hands than the much thicker rattan bo's that much of the rest of their class uses. The nice finish allows it to slide easily through their hands without chaffing. It's also not too heavy. Both daughters can easily manipulate the staff to perform the spins, strikes, and blocks that they are learning.
