How about Jo length?
Can these be ordered in a Jo length as well? I see that you have them in Escrima and Bo, so I'm figuring they are available in the Jo length, just not regularly stocked. Would I be correct in this assumption, and if so, could you make them available for order?

It would be tricky, but not impossible. First you would want to razor cut the foam to the length you desire. Then you would want to cut the internal tube using a saw blade designed for plastic. If you don't have that kind of saw you could go to a local hardware store and secure one or even ask them to cut it for you.

Pros and Cons of a Foam Bo
This video explores the positives and negatives of using foam weaponry.
The specific bo used is highly regarded and offers real quality. Nevertheless there are certain factors that all martial artists should be aware of before they decide to go in the foam direction.

Being in the minor league of Martial Arts the Foam Bo Staff is perfect. Whether it was just practice at home or full contact at the gym, the Rubber Foam Bo by KD Elite sold here is light weight and helped increase my speed and control. Fast and easy shipping, too.
Thanks, Karate Depot for the suggestion to start with the lighter bo staff, GW

That depends on what you mean Alex. If you already ordered the foam bo it might be on it's way. You'd have to call our customer service team or check your package tracking. If you haven't ordered yet then you can just make the change in your shopping cart.

not sure if it will be able to hold up
I have a few friends who want to get into sparing and since the bow was my choice back when i did martial arts (and havent let it slip always love to practice it when i get the chance) but i dont want to hurt them and i've broken solid oak staffs 1 inch thick just in practice they where from century. i really dont think this will hold up to long even if it is just used lighly and just something for all the people wondering about size i find if you are confortable with a particular length there are pro and cons to it all. i work with everything 4-10ft in lenght (10ft just to anoy people who say it cant be done even though it's extra slow and slugish)

Hi Sak. If your friends will not be wearing much protective gear, then the foam covered bo might be the only way to go. BUT, if they ARE wearing gear on their hands/head/chest/etc. I recommend this bo -
wp-bo-10
.
The carved rattan bo is light and flexible which tolerates sparring well. It bends more than an oak bo, but those flexible fibers are what allow you to make contact without causing concussion in your friends.

The best size for you would be the five foot at the moment. 6 foot might be a little challenging until you get the hang of bo work.

I do not believe this is illegal to own in South Dakota, but you may want to do more online research just to be certain.
This bo is good for beginners just learning how to handle the weapon, and it does not break too easily. You should be in good shape.

I don't believe there are any laws against shipping or owning a bo in California. Be aware though that carrying in public could cause you problems.

Like it but disapointed
Shipped in good time and was a great price. My husband loves it, however, it does NOT have the decal on it, its just plain black rubber foam. I was disapointed seeing as this was one of the reasons I picked it! Also, it was suppose to include a personalized gift card that I spent a long time writing for my husband and it NEVER sent.

Good training tool
The service from Karate Depot was very good. I like the follow up by the company to see if I was satified with their product and service. As for the Bo, my daughter is learning a new skill in the house so the rubber foam bo was the way to go.

You'd probably be better off getting a light weight, wood bo. The foam is great for contact but won't give you the same sensation as real wood. Consider something like this:

perfect
Shipped immediately and arrived promptly. Perfect for my 12 year old. Glad I got him foam because he hit himself so much in the head at first that he'd have had a concussion with a wood bo.

Good For Me?
I spar with my friend very often with my own wooden swords, spears and shields. I am slightly experienced with a staff. But you could call be a beginner. I am around 5'1 and am wondering if this weapon would be the right size and weapon for me.

The 6 foot would be a touch long, but that's actually ok for sparring purposes. Use the length to your advantage and minimize spinning techniques so as not to interact with the floor.

Hey Jazzy, glad you chose us to help out with your husband's birthday. The foam bo on this page is a nice choice as it is safe and light. Here are some other ideas: foam nunchaku (
wp-nu-30
), tonfa (
wp-to-01
), and practice kama (
wp-ka-16
).

Sparring
Im using this to spar against some friends who will be using
A pair of tonfas - http://www.karatedepot.com/wp-to-09.html
A pair of 40" swords - http://www.karatedepot.com/wp-sw-99.html
And a pair of numchucks - http://www.karatedepot.com/wp-nu-29.html
Do you think all weapons will hold to the use we will give them?
And in your opinion which weapon is the best if we all have about the same skill level?

Hey Bifi - yes these weapons should stand up to your abuse. Be careful of contact against sharp or rough surfaces (like cement, etc) as that can lead to accelerated foam damage.
All weapons have positive and negative aspects to them, however it is true that when two people start at a distance from each other the individual with the long weapon has an initial advantage. That being the case, if two people are at the exact same skill level the one with the bo (or longer weapon) has the initial edge.

Either 50in or 6 foot, depending on which you select in the dropdown menu above.

Great Bo!
We got 2 of these and they are great! Very sturdy and well put together. We have 16 kids in our class and they spar pretty rough with these and they hold up really well. We will order more in the future for our class and recommend them to anyone that likes to spar or do weapons they are really nice!!

Product quality?
I need to know a couple of things:
First, how sturdy is this the plastic core? I plan to add padding to the ends to make it full contact. Will it withstand that kind of force? Has anyone had problems with cracking?
Second, I need to know how it will flex. I don't want it bending too much on me when I'm trying to block a strike or disarm. When held at one end and wobbled, approx what angle would you say it flexes at?
Thanks so much for any input.

It's fairly sturdy and doesn't have a lot of flex (it's not wobbly).

I personally have no experience with bo staff and so my review may not reflect how good it actually is. For me, it is too flexible (it bends a rediculous amount when brought down hard) making it hard for me to train with (when I say train I mean mess around, but still). Also if left in a bent position for too long it will permanently be bent that way. Also the foam has stretched on the ends so there is now a few inches of just foam outer covering, which I find annoying. It was good for when you got hit by it though. It hurt a bit but no where near what it would if it was a hard bo. Overall, a good cheap bo for small practice, but I don't know how good it is for when you transition to a real bo staff.

I give it a 5/5 because it is really great for training and dosen't break on impact. It also is really flexible, but the one downside is that it makes marks on the walls. Otherwize it's GREAT!!!

its good
This weapon is good. It's lighter than I expected but of good quality. I would recommend it to anyone who want to focus mainly on technique. This is also good for light sparring but does leave marks on surrounding surfaces.

Nice Practice Bo
As far as foam weapons go, this one's a little lighter than I expected. It's still great for practice, and isn't too thick like other padded weapons. After 4 months of use the foam still hasn't ripped or torn.
The only problem I have is the weapon leaves tons of marks on the ceilings/walls. If you plan on using it in tight places, you might consider taping some kind of cover on the ends. Also if a girl comes over and asks about all the black marks on the ceiling, don't whip out the bo and start hitting around your furniture... it won't impress.
